Waterbury, Vt., August 2, 2010 – From August 2-6, 2010, employees of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (GMCR) will sponsor and participate in American Rivers’ National River Cleanup™, a nationwide effort to keep America’s waterways clean. Employee volunteers will use paid time off to pick up litter in and around a fifteen-mile stretch of Vermont’s Winooski River.
“River Cleanup is GMCR’s most popular volunteer effort, and one way we make a difference in our hometown community,” says Paul Comey, GMCR’s Vice President of Environmental Affairs. “Clean water is important for both healthy communities and a good cup of coffee, so we are happy to support the River Cleanup for the sixth year in a row.”
The annual River Cleanup event is part of the company’s Community Action for Employees (CAFE) program, which allows employees to spend up to 52 hours a year volunteering for nonprofit and community-based organizations during normal work hours. Last year, over 125 GMCR employees participated in the River Cleanup, and the group removed 194 tires and one ton of trash from the Winooski River. Additional GMCR employee river cleanup efforts recently took place on the Charles River in Boston, and on the Tennessee River in Knoxville, TN.
National River Cleanup, sponsored by American Rivers, is considered the most successful stream cleanup program in the country. This popular annual event raises public awareness of the magnitude of trash accumulating in our nation’s waterways. Since its inception in 1991, more than 900,000 volunteers have participated in thousands of cleanups across the country, covering more than 162,000 miles of waterways.
