GREEN MOUNTAIN COFFEE BAGS RECOGNIZED FOR GOOD DESIGN

WATERBURY, VT (February 4, 2009) – Green Mountain Coffee® has received an American Package Design Award from Graphic Design USA for its line of 10-ounce and 12-ounce bags of coffee.

The bags, which were introduced to supermarket shelves last year, were chosen among 1,200 entries to receive a “certificate of excellence” award. They feature a vibrant palette of line-specific colors and illustrations that clearly differentiate Signature, Fair Trade Organic, Flavored, Seasonal, and Single Origin choices. The crisp, contemporary look incorporates improved communication of roast level, grind type, certifications, and caffeination that helps consumers find their favorites. A deeper footprint and reduced height of the bags allow them to fit on store shelves more easily than previous designs.

The bags also feature an environmental benefit. The film contains 19.4% PLA (polylactic acid), a polymer made from plant-based renewable resources. The use of PLA helps reduce the environmental impact of the packaging while maintaining the necessary barriers to moisture and light that keep the coffee at its freshest.

“In this age of fragmented audiences, good design and shelf presence are more important than ever,” said Rick Slade, Creative Director for Green Mountain Coffee. “We’re pleased that our new bag designs have been so well-received by consumers, and now recognized by other design professionals.”

Green Mountain Coffee’s packaging redesign project was led by the company’s creative team in partnership with BrandBuzz, a cross-discipline agency that specializes in non-traditional advertising, CRM, interactive, media and viral marketing. BrandBuzz’s art director Peter Herbst and principal designer Cliff Bachner contributed to the project, along with illustrator Miles Hyman.
