WATERBURY, VT (November 19, 2008) - Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR), showed its support of Ferry Beach Ecology School (FBES) in Saco, Maine this week with a donation of $4,500. The donation comes from Green Mountain Coffee’s Regional Operating Center in Biddeford, Maine, as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts in the local community.
FBES is a nonprofit, residential school that provides environmental education. It educates over 6,500 students each year in science and the practice of ecology through innovative programs. Green Mountain Coffee’s contribution to FBES will be used to enhance the Food for Thought program. Food for Thought helps residential students and adults explore the ecology of food systems in the organic garden, in the dining hall and in the compost system. Students experience the difference between conventional and sustainable food systems by raising some of their own foods, and purchasing local & organic fare.
Ian Luce, Regional Operations Manager for Green Mountain Coffee’s Maine site said, “We’ve known about the Food for Thought program at the Ferry Beach Ecology School for a few years now because they serve Green Mountain Coffee’s Fair Trade Certified® organic coffee in their dining hall. Because they educate consumers about organics and sustainable farming, we saw this as an opportunity to support a program aligned with Green Mountain Coffee’s own social and environmental goals.”
Executive Director of the Ferry Beach Ecology School, Drew Dumsch, said, “Funding the Food for Thought Program has been a challenge, but commitments from partners like Green Mountain Coffee make the program possible. Our main focus is to teach kids about the ecosystem and ecology of food with hands on learning. Hopefully,” he continued, “students take away the knowledge that all things are connected, and that provides them with hope and inspiration.”
