Our History

1980............... Founder Bob Stiller gets a great cup of coffee in Waitsfield, Vermont and buys into the coffee shop.

1981............... Green Mountain Coffee Roasters incorporates.

1982............... Production moves to Waterbury, VT.

1983............... Employees begin composting used coffee grounds at retail stores.

1986............... First organic coffee introduced in a retail market test.

                        Mail order business is launched.

                        Kings becomes our first supermarket chain customer.

1989............... Employee Environmental Committee begins meeting and first 
                        recycling program is established.

1990............... Developed Earth-Friendly™ Coffee Filters that are oxygen-
                        whitened and dioxin-free.

1992............... Created the Stewardship Program, our first quantifiable effort to 
                        promote coffee quality, a healthy environment, and respectful 
                        treatment of workers.

                        Broke ground on 10,000 square foot manufacturing facility in 
                        Waterbury, VT.

                        First employee trip taken to a coffee-growing community -- 
                        Hacienda La Minita in Costa Rica. To date, we have sent nearly 
                        18% of our employees on trips “to source.”

1993............... Green Mountain Coffee Roasters goes public on Sept. 21, 1993. 
                        Stock opens at $10.

                        Two engineers approach Green Mountain Coffee about 
                        developing a single-cup brewing system. Keurig is born!

1994............... Waterbury facility expands, adding 25,000 square feet.

1995............... Company headquarters moves to Waterbury, VT. Company 
                        turns a profit.

1997............... ExxonMobil begins serving Green Mountain Coffee.

                        Introduced Organic Peruvian Select as the first coffee in 
                        our organic line.

                        Waterbury facility expands, adding 40,000 square feet.

                        Company wins 3M award for developing the industry’s first 
                        biodegradable bag for bulk coffee purchases.

                        Green Mountain Coffee enters the office coffee service market.

                        Green Mountain Coffee is the first roaster to offer coffee in a 
                        K-Cup® portion pack for the Keurig Single-Cup Brewing System.

                        Nick Lazaris is named President/CEO of Keurig.

1998............... Green Mountain Coffee closes retail stores to focus on 
                        wholesale business.

                        Certified organic coffee line expands to five coffees.

                        First order received on consumer direct e-commerce site.

                        Keurig’s first Single-Cup coffee brewer for the office is delivered.

1999............... Installed the first phase of an electricity co-generation system 
                        in our production plant.

                        Waterbury facility expands by 9,000 square feet.

2000............... Green Mountain Coffee’s commitment to Fair Trade begins. 
                        Signed a contract with TransFair USA to certify our organic 
                        coffees.

2001............... Expanded our certified organic line to 27 coffees.

2002............... Began sourcing and roasting Fair Trade Certified™ organic 
                        coffees for Newman’s Own® Organics.

                        Conducted our first internal, company-wide environmental 
                        assessment.

2003............... Began offsetting our greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing 
                        renewable energy credits.

                        Keurig’s first at-home brewer, the B100, is launched.

2004............... Began efforts to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint 
                        by reducing waste and purchasing renewable energy credits.

                        Launched Anti-Idling initiative to save fuel.

                        New, $9 million, 52,000 square foot distribution center opens 
                        in Waterbury.

2005............... Agreement signed with McDonald’s to serve Newman’s Own 
                        Organics Blend in the Northeast.

2006............... Green Mountain Coffee Roasters acquires Keurig, Incorporated.

                        Green Mountain Coffee helps develop an eco-friendly hot paper 
                        cup, and introduces cold beverage cups and lids made from 
                        renewable resources.

                        Visitor Center and Café opens at the Waterbury train station in VT.

2006/2007...... Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is the first company to be 
                        named #1 on list of “100 Best Corporate Citizens” two years in a 
                        row.

2007............... Converted all Waterbury-based delivery vehicles to biodiesel.

                        Gombe Reserve coffee launched, in cooperation with the Jane 
                        Goodall Institute.

                        Updated Newman’s Own Organics and Single Origin 10-oz. 
                        packaging to include 19.4% polylactic acid (PLA), a polymer 
                        derived from natural resources. Converted all bags in 2008.

                        87,000 square foot facility in Essex, VT opens.

                        Keurig launches the B130, Keurig’s first in-room Single-Cup 
                        hotel brewer.

                        Larry Blanford joins GMCR as President and CEO. 
                        Bob Stiller remains as Chairman of the Board.

2008............... 334,000 square foot plant in Knox County, TN opens.

                        Nick Lazaris steps down. Michelle Stacy named new 
                        President of Keurig, Inc.

2009............... GMCR announces it will build a 100kW solar array on the 
                        roof of its distribution center in Waterbury.

                        GMCR acquires the Tully’s Coffee® brand and wholesale 
                        business.
